Charlie Whittaker leads the Ostrom Bioinformatics Core Facility in the Swanson Biotechnology Center at MIT’s Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research. Whittaker and his staff provide expertise the KI community with bioinformatics, statistics and computational support. Their facility has made numerous contributions to research projects and their work is frequently recognized in publications through authorship or acknowledgements. He is also co-chair of the ABRF Genomics and Bioinformatics Research Group (GBIRG).
Whittaker received his BS in biology from University of Vermont (1990) and his PhD in cell and developmental biology from the University of Virginia (1996). He was a post-doctoral fellow in Richard Hynes’ lab at the Center for Cancer Research at MIT where he developed an interest in bioinformatics and computing. He contributed to the Human Genome Project while working at the Broad Institute from 2002-2003 before rejoining the Koch Institute in his current role in 2004.
